Hip hop started in the Bronx Burroughs of New York City in the 1970s. It started as a way for people to come with issues such as racism, gender identity, national identity, and being LGBTQ. Hip hop and rap music is often about violence, as many city neighborhoods deal with a lot of violence each year. These themes reflect the lives that people lead and issues that are important to them, because these are things that they see each day, and issues that are about their identities. Hip Hop artists are now found out throughout the world because these same themes are common in other cultures besides the U.S. These other cultures deal with similar problems with ethnic discrimination, feeling marginalized, and also violence.
