The Louvre Lesson

Today I am teaching a lesson on the Louvre. I have never been there, yet I would love to go there someday. Well, here is some of the lesson:

The Louvre has some of the most famous paintings and sculptures on Earth.
There is the Mona Lisa, the most famous painting in the world. About six million people see the painting every year. It is in an enclosure behind bullet-proof glass.



A famous sculpture in the Louvre is "The Winged Victory of Samothrace". It was made between 290 and 190 B.C. It is of the Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. It was found in Greece in 1863 and brought to Paris that same year. Unfortunately the sculpture has lost its arms and head. It is still considered to be beautiful and the missing parts make it look more like a ghost.



The Louvre has 50,000 pieces from Ancient Egypt.

I didn't know as much about the Louvre until I had to teach this lesson. I have a book of essays to teach the students. I came across this and then looked things up on the museum. I have always wanted to go there, now I want to go even more!

It sounds interesting. I am the same way about art as I am with wine. I often can't tell the cheap stuff from the good stuff some times but I know what I like when I see it.

I agree with you on art. I can appreciate things at a university art show that the students made. I can also appreciate things by the masters.

While an undergraduate student at Andrews University I took a poetry class. I studied some of A.E. Stallings' poetry. She studied lots of classical poetry and literature of Greece. She does translation of poetry from Greek to English. An interesting thing she said was that when she was at university to study ancient, Greek poetry, she came across some poems that described early springtime flowers such as hyacinths blooming at the same time as later spring flowers. So, I haven't been posting lately. I have been busy working on my Master's Degree in English and a Master's Certificate in Human Rights. I have been enjoying my studies overall. I have been challenged a lot by studying Chaucer this semester (hey, that guy lived six hundred years ago).  I hope to get at least a B in that class. I worked on my degree last summer, taking one class over Summer Session I and two over Summer Session II to get things done and over with.  I got an A and two A- grades.  I have been trying to stay afloat with this semester. I ended up with one late paper for Chaucer due to my factory job I had at the time and time management.  I ended up losing a letter grade, which made me upset. I decided that I have had enough of Facebook. I have been contemplating deleting my account.  I have already deleted my Twitter at least a year ago.  I also don't have Pinterest or Instagram.  I know that I use Facebook too much.
